LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A well-known Lufkin photographer whose work has been showcased in national publications has died.

Joe Bruce Lowery died Wednesday evening. He was 60.

According to his website, Lowery searched the "backroads and common places of Texas in search of compelling natural images since the mid 1980s."

His work was used in publications and businesses such as Sierra Club, Audubon Society, Barnes & Noble, Texas Highways Calendars and magazine.

Lowery was named by Texas Highways as one of their top photographers of the last 25 years.

As a portrait photographer, he worked with First Lady Laura Bush and Tara Watson-Watkins when she was named Miss Texas in 2000.
