LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Lufkin Police officers arrested a 25-year-old former Cinemark employee Tuesday in connection to allegations that he stole about $7,000 from the movie theater.

Gerald Derrone Griffin, of Lufkin, was booked into the Angelina County Jail on a state-jail felony theft between $2,500 and $30,000 charge. He was released later Tuesday after he posted a bail amount of $2,500.

According to the arrest affidavit, an LPD officer took a theft report from the manager of the Cinemark located at 109 Miles Way in Lufkin. The manager told the officer that Griffin, who was an assistant manager, had been stealing money from the cash registers at the movie theater complex, the affidavit stated.

The manager at Cinemark reported the theft to the company’s theft department. Griffin gave a written statement that said that he started taking money sometime around November or December of 2015, the affidavit stated.

Griffin allegedly said in his statement that he would wait for large groups to make purchases, and after they left, he would void the transaction and pocket the money. In the statement, Griffin said he believes that he took about $3,000 between that time and April 2016.

However, the company’s loss prevention specialist told police that the total was more like $7,000, which Griffin disputed, the affidavit stated.

Back in April, Griffin said he would pay back the $3,000 he took, but he has still made no effort to pay the money back, the affidavit stated. The manager told the Lufkin Police officer that her company’s loss prevention department told her to go ahead and file charges against Griffin.
