LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Chaos erupted on Capitol Hill Wednesday night during a day-long sit-in on the House floor by Democrats to protest Congressional Republican inaction on gun violence.
Around 9 p.m., House Speaker Paul Ryan tried to call the chamber back into order only to get protest from members of Congress.
The tension reached a boiling point with East Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert shouting at Rep. Brad Sherman, of California, and other Democrats.
Rep. Gohmert shouting "Radical Islam killed these people," while pointing to photos of the victims killed in the Orlando nightclub massacre.
Democrats responded by drowning out the East Texas Congressman chanting "No bill, no break."
According to The Hill, Rep. Gohmert had to be separated from Florida Rep. Corrine Brown during the exchange.
The fiery change was captured by California Rep. Scott Peters on his Periscope video feed broadcasted on C-SPAN.
The House Democrats resumed the sit-in after the call to order by House Speaker Ryan. They're vowing to go all night on the House floor.
Since 10:25 a.m. Wednesday, the mostly House Democrats spent the day ripping Republicans for being silent on the "epidemic" of shootings.
The House Democrats want House Speaker Paul Ryan to allow a vote on gun control.
The legislators are pushing for a bi-partisan amendment that would extend background checks and block gun purchases for those already on a terror watch list before the July 4th break.
This sit-in comes just days after all four gun amendments failed in the U.S. Senate despite mounting pressure following the Orlando nightclub massacre that killed 49 people and injured 53 others.
Gohmert released an additional statement on Thursday morning:
"The Orlando shooter personally in his own voice message made clear he was killing for the Islamic State which is the most incendiary, radical form of Islam. Muslim friends in the Middle East, Africa and Asia have asked me why the Obama administration refuses to recognize that the radical Islamists are at war with us; and House Democrats joined in that refused recognition today.
The sit in on the House floor violates so many different House rules, yet they continue in sheer disrespect for the memory of the Orlando victims by refusing to stand up to or even call out the radical Islamist hatred that drove the murderer. After 11 hours of their disrespect for the House rules and the Orlando victims, I had to speak up and point out 'Radical Islam killed those innocent victims. Are you next going to outlaw pressure cookers (that were used in Boston)?'"
