NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

The helipad at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital now has a name: The Mervis Lowery Helipad.

It was named for longtime East Texas civic leader Mervis Lowery.

Lowery served on the Nacogdoches County Hospital District Board of Directors for 18 years.

A lifetime citizen of Etoile, Lowery was instrumental in establishing the Etoile Volunteer Fire Department and in having local first responders trained and certified.

He campaigned avidly to establish a helipad on the Memorial Hospital campus, and though he was no longer a board member when his dream finally came to fruition, Lowery knew that the helipad would be named in honor of all his hard work and dedication.

Many members of the Etoile Volunteer Fire Department and the Memorial EMS team were on hand for the dedication, as well as local law enforcement and State Representative Travis Clardy.

Lowery died December 22, 2015. He was 81.
