State Might Ban Gays From Becoming Foster Parents

The bill to ban homosexuals from being foster parents passed the Texas House Wednesday by an overwhelming 135 to 6 vote.

The bill would ban homosexuals or bisexuals from becoming foster parents. Also anyone who is now a foster parent in Texas that is a homosexual would have their children taken away.

Right now Child Protective Services operates without asking foster parents about their sexual orientation. The bill would require prospective and current foster parents to give their sexual orientation.

Republican Representative Robert Talton of Pasadena proposed the bill. He says he doesn't think it is right for young children to be exposed to that sort of behavior when they are young.

Representatives from the Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby of Texas say they estimate between 2,000 and 2,500 foster children will be affected by the measure if it passes.
