LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Several East Texas law enforcement agencies have been overwhelmed with gifts and signs of support since five Dallas police officers were shot and killed while patrolling an area used for a peaceful protest.
Everything from cards, cookies and special plaques to simple hugs have been given to police departments around Angelina County.
The departments have been posting the gifts on social media. They say it is not to brag about what they have gotten but to make sure people know that the East Texas area is a community that cares.
"We don't expect it," said Jessica Pebsworth, a spokeswoman for the Lufkin Police Department. "The community has been so supportive."
Pebsworth said it is not just Lufkin but all agencies in the county that reach out and make sure the community knows they care. Pebsworth said having that relationship can help with communication. Many of the departments take time to share their activity on social media.
"In the world we live in. it is important to show the guys are in the community," Pebsworth said. "We don't post those things showing what we do. The guys want to be out there in the community and doing these things for kids."
