Diboll native and former Green Bay Packer Jermichael Finley was back in East Texas Monday to preview his free upcoming summer football camp.
At the Buffalo Wild Wings in Lufkin, many came through the doors to register for the camp where Finley held an open registration and meet-and-greet.
“It's awesome to give back and that's what I'm here for,” said Finley. “It makes me feel good and makes the community feel good, so I'm willing to do whatever I can do.”
The former NFL star is putting a unique twist to his camp.
The camp is free. Instead of sending a paycheck to register, Finley wants a written essay from the kids about their life goals. Each kid will also receive a backpack with school supplies.
Finley's approach to his camp comes from his NFL stretch that was cut short due to career-ending injuries. With the essay and emphasis on education, he's hoping to inform kids that there's more to life than just football and wants to make the future generation more well-rounded.
“When diving into football or diving into any sport hard, you sometimes lose focus of your education. You lose focus of the real world,” said Finley. “My career was cut short because of a career-ending injury. I want to have the kids focus on other things instead of just diving into football and making it your life. After football you get a normal life and you got to be well prepared for it.”
