ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Angelina and Nacogdoches counties saw spikes in their June jobless rates compared to the May numbers.

The Deep East Texas Workforce Commission released its unemployment report Friday. Statewide, the unemployment rate went from 4.2 percent in May to 4.8 percent in June.

Angelina County’s unemployment rate went from 5.3 percent in May to 6.0 percent in June. The jobless percentage for Nacogdoches County went from 4.4 percent in May to 5.4 percent in June.

Angelina County’s unemployment numbers may be starting to reflect the layoffs that GE Oil and Gas announced back in May. About two months ago, GE Oil & Gas announced the company’s plans to restructure its Lufkin operations.

A company official said the restructuring will likely result in the loss of 300 jobs in the Angelina County area. At that time, GE Oil & Gas announced that it would be selling its Buck Creek facility and moving its gear production operation to Europe.

According to the report from the Texas Workforce Commission, Angelina County had an available workforce of 37,158 in June. Of that number, 34,910 were employed. Angelina County had a 6.1 percent jobless rate in June of 2015.

To the north, Nacogdoches County had an available workforce of 28,191. Of that number 26,681 were employed in June. The county had a 5.5 percent unemployment rate in June of 2015.

At the city level, Lufkin saw its jobless rate go from 4.8 percent in May to 5.9 percent in June. The City of Nacogdoches saw a larger spike, going from 4.3 percent in May to 5.9 percent in June.
