While other Lufkin High School seniors are getting ready to graduate and start a new life, Javier Ortega is preparing for the fight of his life. The 17-year-old goes on trial next Thursday.
Ortega is accused of walking into the high school locker room last fall and viciously attacking Gerardo Acevedo. Investigators believe he kicked Acevedo in the face and punched him.
Soon after the incident, school administrators talked about how proud they were of how students and staff responded.
Principal Roy Knight said, "The most important thing out of this is how not only the community in general, but school community as well, has rallied around the needs of this family."
Ortega waived his right to a jury. He goes before a Lufkin judge on May 5th. He'll be tried as an adult.
Gerardo Acevedo spent several days in intensive care after the attack. School administrators say he's now doing well. He will graduate this spring.
