NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - The political conventions may be fading from the minds of those of us who watched them on television, but the memory isn't likely to go away anytime soon for Pat Castella.
The Nacogdoches woman said a dream came true when she got elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.
"I'll go if they just put me on the janitorial staff," Castella said with a laugh. "I just want to get there."
Pat Castella started her campaign to become a national Democratic delegate. Back in May. Well, Castella was elected, and she didn't have to sweep the floors.
"It says VIP access," Castella said.
The right credentials got Castella exactly where she wanted to be. Right in the middle of a historic Democratic convention.
"When you were there, they handed out enough paper to paper America," Castella said.
The lifetime Democrat filled her suitcase with the souvenirs. No reminders are needed to recall her most memorable moment.
"I never thought I would live to see the day when on Wednesday night, and I may get weepy now, a black president and a white woman embrace on the Democratic stage - one a president, and the other will be a president for the Democratic party," Castella said.
It's just a prediction at this point, but in the meantime, Castella shares her convention stories, including the numerous interviews and cutaway shots she provided for many news agencies.
"I really sincerely believe I fit, you know, a prototype of a little old lady from Texas with my hat," Castella said.
But Castella obeyed strict orders of "no big hats" from the head of the Texas delegation.
"Some of his friends made this and it says, 'no big hats,' and we gave those out," Castella said.
Another Nacogdoches delegate was a Bernie Sanders supporter.
"Bernie got a tremendous, tremendous amount of applause," Castella said.
The delegate eventually joined the Hillary campaign.
"I'm a Hillary delegate, but I will say Bernie got things onto the platform that would have never been on there if he had not worked so hard," Castella said.
Castella also plans to work hard between now and November for the party she loves so much. It's her thank you for allowing her dream come true.
"A fantasy world. It was something you believe in with all your heart and soul," Castella said. It's like you're in a dream and you can't believe it."
Pat Castella is sharing much of her memorabilia with friends and the Democratic headquarters. Her focus right now is to help out with voter registration drives.
