HOUSTON COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A 23-year-old Crockett man killed when he and his horse were hit by an SUV was taking part in a trail ride, according to a relative.

Brandon Allen Gilford's cousin, Steven Bowen, said Gilford was riding in a trail ride called the "Affiliated Trail Ride." Bowen said they were riding to an arena to take part in different rodeo activities.

The initial DPS report released Monday did not mention Gilford being a part of a trail ride. DPS spokesman David Hendry confirmed Tuesday that Gilford was part of a trail ride.

"The question as to whether or not the driver ignored caution flags will be included in a complete and thorough investigation in which all possibilities are investigated," Hendry said.

The preliminary crash investigation shows that a 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Sherrie Lynn Catoe, 54, of Crockett, was traveling west on SH 7 when it struck a horse and rider that were reportedly in the roadway, the press release stated. Gilford and his horse were both killed as a result of the crash.

Catoe was not injured in the crash.
