LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Students and parents of Lufkin ISD Middle school are in for an adjustment heading into the new school year.
The local middle school is beginning construction next week on their student pick up and drop off zone parking lot.
The purpose of reconstructing the lot is to help provide more light during evening after school events, to get rid of the potholes and to make the lot safer for students throughout the school year.
Lufkin Middle School Principal Jesus Gomez said that the final product will be worth it in the end.
"We'll have a smooth parking lot out there that'll have plenty of parking spaces for our parents three lanes clearly designated for student pick up and drop off. The lighting in the evenings, so lighting at night when we have events at school and just overall aesthetically pleasing to the campus, but the main thing is the safety of the kids. "Gomez said.
The school has been planning on getting this project off the ground for a while now, but due to funding it wasn't feasible until now. The school felt like they were finally in a good place to improve the lot as they head into the new school year.
There will still be a designated parking lot and drop off point for all parental vehicles that have students starting school next week.
"I think it will be a smooth process. I just ask that everyone be patient and courteous to one another. It's going to be a little bit of an adjustment, we're going to modify and adjust all next week to see what would be the best way to get our kids in and out safely." Gomez said.
The new lot is expected to be under construction through February of 2017.
