Texas prison officials say budget reductions requested by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott could result in cutting 1,200 guards from the largest state correctional system in the nation.
Texas prisons already have about 2,000 vacant correctional officer positions in a system of roughly 147,000 inmates.
Prison officials say they could still operate lockups safely if forced to make reductions but are hopeful that lawmakers in 2017 will provide enough funding to avoid cuts.
