LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A staple in Lufkin healthcare is closing its doors after five decades.
A sign greeted customers at Timberland Discount Pharmacy with a notice that Friday was the last day of business for the establishment. The pharmacy originally opened in the 1960s inside Gibson's across from the present day location on timber land Drive. The pharmacy would eventually move and become Howard's in 1984.
In 2013, the pharmacy was sold by Ken Reeves to Medicine Chest, a company based out of Sulphur Springs. Recently, CVS purchased 19 of the Medicine Chest locations and announced the closure of the Lufkin location. According to pharmacy technician Katie Parrish, the employees were given a 16 day notice and were given job opportunities with the pharmacy.
The sign also stated that all of the prescription files will be transferred to the CVS pharmacy on Lufkin Avenue
Parrish has been an employee for 31 years and said it is a sad day.
"One of our customers called this morning. He said, I've been a customer for 46 years," Parish said.
Parish said she has been there for tough times life the building getting flooded on multiple occasions. Parish remembered how the hard times also meant offering comfort to customers.
Even with the hard times, there were plenty of good times. Parish can remember long-time customers bringing in their babies.
Customers that went by the store on Friday showed their appreciation to the staff and shared memories.
"It's more like an old country store," one of the customers told Parish. "They know all of us and we know all of them."
