NACOGDOCHES, Texas (Press Release)– Stephen F. Austin senior quarterback Zach Conque has been named to the 2016 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) FCS National Player of the Year watch list, announced today by the organization. Conque is one of 40 players named to the list and is one of 15 quarterbacks tabbed.
A preseason All-Southland Conference first team selection, Conque is coming off a solid junior season which saw him accumulate just shy of 2,500 total yards. The Little Rock native passed for 1,933 yards and 16 touchdowns while rushing for 554 yards and 11 scores as his 27 touchdowns accounted for was the most of any Southland Conference player.
Conque has already put his name in the Lumberjack record books in a number of categories. Heading into his senior campaign, he ranks sixth all-time in total completions (426), seventh in career total offense (5,846 yards), eighth in career passing yards (4,666) and ninth in career touchdown passes (31). Conque has already established himself as the top rushing quarterback in program history, accumulating 1,180 yards on the ground with 24 touchdowns, ranking tied for fourth all-time in program history in career rushing scores.
Conque is one of four Southland Conference players named to the preseason watch list, joined by a trio of running backs in reigning SLC Player of the Year Kade Harrington of Lamar, McNeese's Ryan Ross and Sam Houston State's Corey Avery. He is also among a group of elite quarterbacks in the group, including reigning CFPA National Performer of the Year Case Cookus of Northern Arizona, North Dakota State's Easton Stick and Jacksonville State's Eli Jenkins.
