Lufkin hairstylist opens program for high-schoolers

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - There is a new college experience for high-school students interested in hair care opening soon.

The East Texas Cosmetology Center will be offering a program to high-school students across the entire county through the early college program.

The program will offer students a chance to get 1,000 hours of credit they need before taking a certification test with the state to be a cosmetologist.

The center will be hosting an open house on Sept. 3 from 1 to 3 p.m.

"All the high school students in the county can come here and get funded for the school," said owner Michelle Oliver. "This is new. We haven't had this since cosmetology has been big in schools. The students will have two years to get the 1,000 hours."

Oliver, who had her own business at Oliver & Co., said the program is available for adults too.

"We are open to the general public, so we welcome people of all ages," Oliver said. "It will be a 1,500-hour program for anyone over 17. There is so much to offer in the cosmetology field."
