LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Today marked the 12th annual National dog day in the United States.

A day that’s meant to show the love and appreciation owner’s have for their four legged companions.

Dog owner Michael Williams said that he enjoys this day because he gets to reflect on the undeniable connection he has with his dog.

“Even though she relies on me I still rely on her for a lot of things. Knowing that she’s there when I come home, just someone to be with no matter how my days been if it’s been rough with school or whatever. I know that she’s going to be there.” Williams said.

East Texans were out in full force today to celebrate this day that comes but once a year.

Dog owner Marnae Fults said she adores her two Australian cattle dogs.

“We appreciate them because they totally enrich our lives, we don’t have any kids yet so these are our babies and they are a part of our family.” Fults said.

National Dog Day is also intended to help bring awareness of the millions of dogs that need to be rescued and that are in need of a good home.

New dog owner Dwayne Greenwood said he feels blessed to have found a pup of his own on National Dog Day.

“It just so happens that today while I’m in Petsmart a friend of mine called me and said hey I think I found you a new dog and while I was in here shopping we made a deal over the phone.” Greenwood said.

With a dog day celebration full of wags, licks, treats, and plenty of love from appreciative dog owners, it’s no wonder this holiday has become so well received East Texas.
