LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - 134 years ago, a small community was born in the Pineywoods that would grow to be the economic epicenter of the region.
On September 12, 1882 the first tracks of land were sold that became Lufkin. It was a stop on the East and West Railway. According to records, the town was named for Capt. Abraham P. Lufkin, a Galveston cotton merchant and city councilman, who was a close friend of HE&WT president Paul Bremond.
Through the years, the town has grown to over 36,000 people with thousands more coming into the city limits for work from the surrounding communities.
The Angelina County Genealogical Society will be hosting a special birthday bash for the city on Sept.12. The group wants to honor the past that was made of up multiple religions and cultures.
"We are all in this together," Dickie Dixon said. "It took all of us to build this. Since 1900, we've grown 400 percent in population. Multiple races and religions made it possible. We need to celebrate them all."
The part will take place from 10 A.M. - 3 P.M. in the council chambers at Lufkin City Hall. There are volunteer opportunities left for ,people who want to help. Anyone wanting to help can call Dixion at (936)-240-8378.
