College soccer arrived in Lufkin this year with the advent of the first-ever Angelina College women’s and men’s soccer teams.
On Tuesday, area fans will get the chance to see their new teams playing at home.
The Lady Roadrunners and Roadrunners will host their first home games of the season, with both teams playing Ranger College at Lufkin High School.
For the Lady ‘Runners, Tuesday’s match will be their third regular-season game of the year. AC’s ladies lost a 2-1 affair in extra time at Richland College, with Cameryn Garcia notching the program’s historic first goal; then dropped the conference opener at No. 12 Navarro by a 3-0 final. In both games, the Lady Roadrunners acquitted themselves well against teams ranked among the nation’s best junior college programs.
The Roadrunner men, however, have yet to play a regular-season game, making Tuesday’s contest their very first. AC’s men lost a 2-0 scrimmage to the University of Houston-Victoria last week, with head coach Freddy Drago rotating numerous players in and out while getting looks at every player.
Even more reason for local soccer fans to attend Tuesday’s matches is the number of local players listed on AC rosters. More than 20 Lady Roadrunners and Roadrunners hail from Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Hudson and other nearby schools.
The Lady Roadrunners will kick off at 6 p.m., with the Roadrunners following at 8 p.m. Follow ACAthletics on Twitter for updates.
