ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Deputies with the Angelina County Sheriff's Office arrested a 29-year-old woman on Aug. 26 after they found her pulling a wagon containing an 11-year-old and a 3-year-old down FM 2109 at night.
The woman smelled strongly of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes, according to Capt. Alton Lenderman with the Angelina County Sheriff's Office.
Ashley Nicole Matchett, of Huntington, is still being held in the Angelina County Jail on a state-jail felony abandoning or endangering a child – criminal negligence charge. Her bail amount has been set at $5,000.
Lenderman said Tuesday that ACSO deputies were dispatched out to the 6500 block of FM 2109 in the evening of Aug. 26 in reference to a 911 call about a woman who appeared to be drunk walking down the dark road.
When the deputies arrived on the scene, they found Matchett in the 100 block of Hickory Nut. Lenderman said, according to the deputies, the woman smelled strongly of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes.
Matchett allegedly became belligerent and started yelling when the ACSO deputies asked her why she was pulling a wagon with an 11-year-old and a 3-year-old child in it down the road.
Matchett told deputies that she was at her ex-husband's house picking up school supplies with the children, and they got in an argument. As a result, she left and went to a friend's house. Matchett admitted to having two drinks at her friend's house and several at her ex-husband's house.
One witness told the ACSO deputies that he or she offered Matchett and the children a ride, but she refused, Lenderman said.
The deputies arrested Matchett on the endangering a child with criminal negligence charge because she was drunk as she walked down the dimly lit road, and she didn't have any reflective tape on her person or on the wagon the children were riding on, Lenderman said.
