NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - We have started every season there is and now we are finally getting to some college football action.
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks open their season this weekend and they're not shying away from starting things off with a competitive challenge. This year's opener will be against Texas Tech.
The Big 12 contenders finished sixth in conference last season with a 4-5 record.
The last time these two met was in 2013 where the Lumberjacks fell short 61-13.
It will no doubt be a growing opportunity for SFA and not just because they're playing a great team. They're traveling 72 players, 35 of which are either freshmen, redshirt freshmen or transfers new to the program.
The number one goal is always going out to win, while also establishing new roles on the team.
"You always go in to prepare to win. This will be no different," said head coach Clint Conque. "Obviously, we realize the challenges in front of us. We would have to play an incredibly, efficient game and they would have to help us a little bit because they're a bigger, deeper team. But it happens every year in college football where David beats Goliath."
"We expect nothing but positivity. We expect to come together and stay together. We want to be that team that goes out there, finishes strong together and never breaks or folds," said senior receiver Justin Liggins.
The Lumberjacks will be traveling to Lubbock. Game day will be Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on the Fox Sports Network.
