LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Bail has been set at $200,000 for the Lufkin man accused in the fatal shooting incident that occurred at Lotus Lane Apartments Sunday night.

Warren Ernest Lewis, 38, is still being held in the Angelina County Jail on a first-degree felony murder charge. His bail amount has been set at $200,000.

According to the arrest affidavit East Texas News obtained Wednesday, Lufkin PD officers responded to reports of shots fired at the Lotus Lane Apartments, which are located in the 3300 block of Lotus Lane at about 10:47 p.m. Sunday night.

When the LPD officers arrived on the scene, they found Billy Carter lying in the parking lot. He was bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds, the affidavit stated.

Carter was transported by ambulance to CHI St. Luke’s Health Memorial Hospital in Lufkin, where he later died as a result of his injuries.

One of the responding Lufkin PD officers spoke to three people that said they witnessed the shooting incident. All three of them told the officer that Lewis was the one who shot Carter, the affidavit stated.

While the Lufkin PD officer was interviewing the witnesses, the dispatcher told him that Lewis was at the Angelina County Jail trying to turn himself in to authorities.

A Lufkin PD sergeant interviewed Lewis, and he admitted to shooting Carter because “he had grown tired of Carter talking s--- about him,” the affidavit stated.

Based on information Lewis provided to the Lufkin Police Department, an LPD detective was able to recover the pistol believed to have been used in the shooting incident, the affidavit.
