1-1 is not a bad way to start the year and even though Nacogdoches has suffered a loss, it doesn't mean there aren't players shining and doing some big things.
Take Phillip Jones for instance. The running back has been taking the field by storm by racking in 250 yards in just two games, not to mention he also has three touchdowns.
Jones ran for 120 yards against Kilgore and he didn't even play in the fourth quarter. Then he had 130 yards against Lufkin. Those are big numbers against respective teams.
Jones said he's taken a more mature approach to the season, and these big numbers are no surprise to the coaching staff.
“I can say my vision got better. I used to have tunnel vision and now I can see the whole field. That helps me out more and I've been working on my cuts quicker,” said Jones.
“Phillip's a solid back. A lot of people overlook the little things and he doesn't do that. He's a great blocker besides being a good running back. He does a great job of finding the creases and he does a great job of attacking the hole,” said Nacogdoches head coach Bobby Reyes. “He's gotten a lot stronger in the weight room and his speed has improved greatly. Last year he could make a break and he might not take it to the house. This year when he makes a breaks he's got a chance to take it all the way.”
Nacogdoches will continue to have a battled-tested schedule ahead. Up next for the Dragons is Tyler Lee who is currently 2-0 on the season. The game will be Friday in Tyler, starting at 7:30 p.m.
