NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - A Nacogdoches group called the Hispanic Outreach Committee is taking matters into their own hands and getting East Texans to the polls.
"We're asking everybody who is eligible to vote, just get out there and exercise your right to vote," Hispanic outreach committee member, Andres Sifuentes said.
Organizers with the Hispanic outreach committee said the time is now to get registered to vote.
"It concerns your everyday life, so why not," Hispanic Outreach Committee member, Jamie Serrano said. "Why not let them know how we feel?"
Hispanics are being called the nation's largest ethnic community with about 55 million people. Ten million of those people reside in Texas.
East Texas organizers said their voices need to be heard.
"Your vote is your voice, so we really need the Hispanic community to get registered, so they can exercise that right to vote, and that way, their voices can be heard," said Hispanic Outreach Committee Chair Raul Garza Jr.
From the beginning of this year's presidential election, Hispanics have been the topic of conversation. Now both Democrats and Republican candidates have shifted gears to sway the group's vote.
This committee said their main concern is increasing the Hispanic voter turnout.
"What we're doing is we're trying to go out into the Hispanic community, talk with them, and give them the opportunity to get registered," Garza said. "That way they have the opportunity to vote."
The committee met on Thursday to brainstorm on ways to make Sunday's event successful. They'll be passing out registration forms in Spanish to help make it easier for Hispanic residents.
"It's one thing to get registered, but you have to exercise that right that you have," Garza said. "You have to go out to the polls and you have to go ahead and cast your ballot."
The voter registration deadline in Texas ends on October 11th.
The Hispanic Outreach Committee will be out Sunday at La Michoacana grocery in Nacogodches. from 2 to 4 p.m. to get people to sign up.
