LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Traveling the world is something a lot of people dream about doing as they enter retirement.
One east Texas couple has made that dream a reality having traveled to over 20 international locations alone. The couple is following a trend for many Baby Boomers.
Dennis and Joan Rankin have led quite an exciting life since retiring almost 20 years ago.
The Lufkin couple always dreamed of traveling the world, but funds were limited due to them raising three children.
That all changed when they both retired.
"We actually took two foreign trips in the year 2000, and one was to a trip that took us through Italy Austria, Germany, and France," Dennis Rankin said.
The two have visited all of the earth's continents except Antarctica, and that still is a dream of theirs.
"We take three or four trips every year," Dennis Rankin said.
Dennis Rankin also loves photography and has captured some stunning photos from their international travels.
"I like the animals," Joan Rankin said. "He likes to take the pictures."
Their most recent trip was to the Netherlands during peak traveling season.
"Tulip time, though was special, you had to go," Joan Rankin said. "I wanted to go see tulips, so you had to go at that time."
According to the U.S Travel Association people, aged 65 and over comprise 18 percent of the leisure travel market.
"Travel is enlightening and interesting and culturally expanding. It provides experiences," Dennis Rankin said.
The couple has also found ways to cut costs on travel by looking for group discounts as well as planning ahead.
"We found that it's much wiser to pick out where you want to go then shop for it as opposed to just take what comes along," Dennis Rankin said.
The Rankins said that that traveling after retirement has expanded their outlook on the world.
"Life didn't end the day you retired," Joan Rankin said. "My life really began."
