LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - It was a day of celebration for employees at Brookshire Brothers.
The employee-owned company celebrated their 95th birthday today. On Sept. 21, 1921, brothers Tom and Austin Brookshire started the company with their first store in Lufkin. Since then the company has expanded to 7,000 employees with 113 stores and 4 more in the works.
The company is rivaled in size by Brookshire Grocery that was started in 1929 after Wood and W.A. Brookshire withdrew from the company to form their own in Tyler. The two companies have been competitors but have also agreed to not overstep the others territory.
In attendance at the part was Dot Brookshire, the widow of Oscar Brookshire, who is the son of Austin Brookshire. Dot was joined by her brother-in-law Eugene.
"'I'm so proud of them now for still doing good community things," Dot Brookshire said. "They've grown, and everybody should be really proud that they have helped do this."
