NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Pharmacist Joe Gomer woke up expecting his birthday to be just like all of his others.
A surprise birthday party was thrown by his co- workers at the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Nacogdoches.
Gomer said he never saw it coming.
"Just surprised, completely surprised, it was a real shock." Gomer said.
Gomer has been in the pharmaceutical industry for 67 years and has been working part-time in Nacogdoches for 7.
"I always said I didn't want to work in a place where I was just a number, I wanted to be personally involved with customers and know them." Gomer said.
As he prepares to retire he spoke of the many changes he's experienced throughout his career.
"I've worked in 52 different stores in my career and it's been very satisfying." Gomer said.
He's also made quite an impression on the people he works with as well.
Technician Cheli Gilchrist said no one deserves this more.
"I think he deserves it he's been doing this for 66 years. Who else can say they're the oldest pharmacist probably in Texas, if not the U.S. in the oldest town in Texas, how neat is that." Gilchrist said.
Technician Connie Aucoin said he also has a special relationship with his customers.
"He's very knowledgeable in the pharmacy area and I think all of our customers really like him."Aucoin said.
And as for what's next for the 89 year old, well.
"Oh I'll hang loose and be ready if somebody needs me and like I say I'm kind of ready to taper off." Gomer said.
Gomer studied Pharmacy at the University of Texas at Austin
