From the Lufkin Police Department
LUFKIN, TEXAS (News Release) - The Department is investigating an incident in which a card skimmer was found inside a gas pump at Cherry's Grocery on North Raguet Street earlier this week.
A technician found the card skimmer inside pump No. 1 after being called there Tuesday to repair the pump. The skimmer was removed from the gas pump and collected as evidence in the case.
Earlier this week, an officer took a report debit card abuse in which a woman said the last place she used her card was at the Cherry's Grocery pump in question. Detectives do not have a clear timeline of how long the skimmer had been in place, but store employees estimated a week.
"If you used your debit or credit card at Cherry's Grocery pump No. 1 before Tuesday, we would advise you to contact your bank or credit card company to have a new card number issued," Public Relations Specialist Jessica Pebsworth said.
Because skimmers like these are being put inside the gas pumps, customers cannot tell that they're there. To avoid this, the Department recommends paying inside the store instead of at the pump.
