LUFKIN, TX (Press Release)- Everything about Tuesday’s physical, bitterly contested soccer match between Angelina College and Northeast Texas Community College was close, so it only stood to reason the final score would be the same.
The Roadrunners and Eagles battled for 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, with neither team able to find the final edge in a thrilling 2-2 draw at Jase Magers Field in Lufkin.
With the ‘Runners trailing 2-1 late, AC’s Modesto Corpus took a corner kick from Julio Islas – his second try, after the first deflected out of bounds – and slid a shot through Eagle defenders for the equalizer in the 83rd minute. Earlier, Islas scored AC’s first goal on a free kick following a foul on teammate Luis Garcia.
Garcia spent the entire match coming oh-so-close to a multiple-goal game, shedding two or three defenders at a time on breakaways, only to have his shots thwarted by Eagles. Time after time, Garcia outraced defenders toward the goal, bringing the home crowd to their feet, but NTCC somehow managed to recover in time to prevent the score.
In overtime, NTCC nearly scored the golden goal, only to see two kicks caroming off the cross bar and two others ending up punched away at the gloves of AC keeper Mickey Raine. Defenders Kacy Bennett and Dorian Bravo also contributed huge defensive plays to keep the Eagles out of the net.
AC earned a free kick in the final 30 seconds of the second overtime, but officials burned 25 seconds placing the ball and players. Lalo Escareno’s desperation kick at the final buzzer sailed wide, leaving the teams even for the night.
The Roadrunners will host San Jacinto College on Friday as part of a Roadrunner/Lady Roadrunner doubleheader. The men will kick off at 5 p.m., followed by the Lady Roadrunners vs. Tyler College at 7 p.m. Both games are at Jase Magers Field at Lufkin High School.
