The Shelbyville athletic director has resigned a day after getting arrested over allegations of a domestic dispute in which his wife accused him of choking her.

Superintendent Ray West said Jason Colter Ferguson, 45, tendered his resignation Thursday morning. West said Offensive Coordinator Lance Gamble will take over as athletic director and head football coach.

Ferguson is charged with third-degree assault cause bodily injury.

According to an arrest affidavit, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office received a call from SFA police on Tuesday in regard to a student worker who had been assaulted by her husband.

Investigators from Shelby County met with the woman, who said that she had an argument with Ferguson on Sept. 21. She said Ferguson pushed her onto a couch, got on top of her and began spitting in her face and screaming obscenities at her. She said after arguing a little more, he went outside and sat on a bench. She said she went outside and apologized and then he slammed her onto the bench and forced her onto her back.

The woman said Ferguson then squeezed her throat to the point where she passed out briefly. He then let her up and went inside the house.

The woman said she went inside the house and told Ferguson that he had just choked her out. She said he told her he was aware of what happened and it did not seem to bother him. She said they continued to argue in the living room before going to bed. She said in the bedroom, Ferguson jumped on her again and began spitting on her while putting his hands in her mouth and his fingers in her eyes. She said after about 30 minutes they finally went to sleep for the night.

Ferguson's bond has not yet been set.
