It's been a brutal five years for the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks when it comes to play Sam Houston State in the Battle of the Piney Woods.
The Bearkats have come out on top for five straight wins. It will also be even more of a challenge for SFA now that Sam Houston is No. 2 in the country.
What may end the losing spell is switching things up to have Hunter Taylor start as the new playcaller. He's a fifth year senior so he's witnessed the disappointment over the last few years.
“I'm prepared, not because I'm going to play any different or play any better, just because I'm going to play how I play. We're going to have a good game plan going into it and as long as I do what I've done and not try to do too much, it will work out,” said Taylor.
Former starting quarterback Zach Conque isn't completely out of the picture. Taylor and Conque will be sharing time.
While Taylor feels more than prepared to start under the high stakes, he believes it will take both of them to pull off the win.
“It certainly can work. We're very contrasting. When you look at him, he's a man of a man. He's huge and he can run extremely well. We need that. I don't bring that to the table and I'm not going to bring that to the table. I'm not gaining four inches in four days. We need him to win,” said Taylor. “With me and with my skill set, I bring the quick release, quick decisions and that kind of thing. We’re just going to need both to win. However we have to make it work together, I know he and I can do that.”
The 91st Battle of the Piney Woods will once again be at NRG Stadium in Houston. Game starts Saturday at 3 p.m.
