NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

The African American Heritage Project held a barbecue fundraiser in Nacogdoches this afternoon to help raise funds for the Historic Clay house in the Zion Hill Historic District.

AAHP Chairperson Jo Frances West said it’s important to protect our history.

"We maintain and we restore our history, we don't want to just tear our history up, we don't want to forget about it, we want to maintain and restore everything that we have here rather than tear it down and build something new." West said.

Over 400 people were expected to come out today with the hope of raising 5 thousand dollars for the site.

All the fundraiser proceeds will go to help properly restore the state recognized archeological landmark.

Tickets were $10 for a mixed plate of barbecue, sides, a drink and dessert.
