The Crockett Bulldogs are off to the best start they’ve had in over a decade, entering their district season undefeated at 5-0.
Part of the great start is a result of their more balanced attack.
The Bulldogs are always known for sending the ball in the air. That's still a part of their offense, but they admit they're able to be more versatile in their attack now that their run game has stepped up.
Head coach Jimmy Thompson said the biggest difference between last year and this year, and the key to what has propelled them to their undefeated start, is their defensive improvements.
Crockett has one shut out and has only allowed on average 11 points per game. At this time last year, the Bulldogs were over 37 points against.
“Defensively, the whole year, I thought we’ve played real well and that takes a lot of pressure off your offense that we didn’t feel last year,” said Thompson. “Last year, we felt like we almost had to score every time we touch the ball. This year, we don’t feel that way. The defense has put us in position to score and the defense has scored two or three touchdowns this year.”
“We’ve improved on defense a lot. Nobody can run on us like that. If we play our game, no one can run on us,” said linemen Jvon Colter.
What’s helped the defense is their experience on the field. Crockett returned 10 defensive starters.
“We know the game and we know what we need to do to be a great football team. With being seniors, we’ve matured and know what to do,” said Colter.
No. 8 Crockett is in for a Top 10 showdown. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play No. 2 Newton this week. The game will be in Newton on Friday, starting at 7:30 p.m.
