LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A Lufkin native has been added to the list of recipients to receive the Silver Spike Award on Friday.

Dana Smithhart, the 2016 recipient of the Silver Spike Award, is currently a Gear Up counselor at Angelina College.

Smithhart has been involved in the various activities in Angelina County since graduating from the leadership Lufkin program in 1989.

She thought her best friend Mary King was getting the award this year, but to her surprise King was already in on the secret.

“I am overwhelmed to say the least. I thought one of my wonderful friends Mary King was going to get this award and I tried so hard to get here,” Smithhart said. “We were having a big tour at Angelina College.”

When last year’s winner, Jeff Todd was reading this year’s recipients bio, she knew something was up.

“They started talking about her bio, and said she had two boys,” Smithhart said. “I thought to myself, ‘she doesn’t have two boys,’ they’ve already got that confused. When they finally said she worked at the Chamber of Commerce, I thought to myself ‘Mary didn’t work at the Chamber of Commerce.’ So then it finally hit me,” Smithhart said.

Smithhart was bashful about the win, but says she continue to work hard for her community.

“I have to say that I am humbled and honored to receive this,” Smithhart said. “When you see the list of recipients I’m not sure that I fit with that group, but I really felt honored so thank you.”
