JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A local photographer is using his talents to capture the courage, strength and beauty that comes from surviving breast cancer.

They're called Survivor's Sessions, and free of charge, survivors are transformed to show what it looks like when you make it to the "other side" of breast cancer.

From natural beauty, transformed into flawless fierceness, these Survivor Sessions are a labor of love for photographer Ken Gordon, whose mother survived beast cancer over a decade ago.

“My mom is a 15 year survivor and I wanted to shoot her, but she lives in Chicago," said Gordon. "So I decided to honor her by shooting other survivors.”

Ken put a call out on social media, searching for survivors, like Dorothy Nickson, who beat breast cancer 5 years ago.

“Yeah, I'm here," said Nickson. "Thank god, thank god.”

Beverly Raines beat it twice, most recently, 8 years ago.

“It just makes you feel fabulous," said Raines. "It's like 'look at me now'. And when you're going through and you're losing your hair, and you don't look your best, you can come today and get all jazzy and be like 'I survived it. Here I am'.”

The shoots are more than just photos - a professional make up artist is on site, donating her time and talents.

“I know a lot of time, going through the process, the physical toll it takes on the body," said Gordon. "A lot of the ladies may not feel as beautiful, so this is my way of letting them know that they are still beautiful.”

And if words don't make the survivors feel beautiful, the photos surely will.

Each woman gets a free 8 x 10 photo, plus the memory of being a glamzon for a day, but it came at a cost.

They offer these words of encouragement to those about to walk the path they've already traveled.

“Even though you are going through, there is light on the other side," said Raines. "So all you have to do is believe and have faith and you'll be ok.”

Ken is offering free Survivor Sessions throughout the rest of the month.

If you know of someone who would like to take part, give him a call at 601-214-4715.
