SAN AUGUSTINE, TX (KTRE) - An Orange man accepted a plea bargain deal of 10 years in prison in connection to a deadly two-vehicle wreck that occurred in San Augustine County in June of 2015.
Bryan Spurgeon appeared in a San Augustine court Tuesday for a plea bargain hearing. He pleaded guilty to two felony charges intoxicated manslaughter and intoxicated assault.
Kevin Dutton, the district attorney for San Augustine and Sabine counties, said that the family approved the plea bargain deal and added they suggested the sentence.
According to a Texas Department of Public Safety report, Spurgeon was driving northbound on US 96, five miles south of San Augustine when he swerved into the southbound lane and hit a 2015 Honda Pilot, driven by William Pond, 61, of Orange.
Pond's wife, Malinda Pond, 61, of Orange, died at the scene.
William Pond and the couple's two grandchildren were injured in the wreck. Spurgeon was also treated at a San Augustine hospital before his arrest.
