LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - It was special Tuesday night for Angelina College Athletics at the Lufkin High School soccer field.
Their men and women's soccer teams wrapped up their inaugural seasons and played Jacksonville. Before each contest started, the school made time to recognize their first-ever sophomore graduating classes.
Sophomore Night honored a unique, one-of-a-kind class, considering they are the players that started the AC Soccer programs.
Head soccer coach Freddy Drago came and started AC's first-ever soccer teams. He had a solid core follow him from Cisco College to start up the women's team here in Lufkin.
"We talked about it at the beginning of the year. If you lay a good foundation, that house is going to last forever. That's what we wanted these two groups to remember and to keep reminding them the entire season that they're laying the foundation for the teams that come behind them. I think both groups have done a great job of that," said Drago.
The Lady Roadrunners have had a solid first year. Before Tuesday's game, they were fourth in the Region 14 Conference. The women beat Jacksonville to improve with a 5-4 record and their season will be moving forward.
"I never thought that something this big would happen this early in my life. This is pretty cool. How many people can say that they got to start a soccer program? I'm really grateful and I think all the girls are grateful to play here this year. I'm excited for the next coming games," said sophomore midfielder Allie Chapman.
The men's team basically had to come together from scratch and recognized just four sophomores.
Tuesday was their last game of the season as they unfortunately won't be making the Region Tournament.
"I think the future is going to be bright here. The coach is scouting new players from all over the country and I think with more years, this college could be one of the top teams in the nation," said sophomore midfielder Lalo Escareno.
The Lady Roadrunners have one last game remaining in their regular season. AC will play Navarro on Saturday at the Lufkin High School soccer fields at 5:30 p.m. The winner will get the No. 3 seed entering the Region 14 Tournament.
