Ex-Lufkin High cheerleader coach arrested, charged with improper relationship

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A former Lufkin ISD cheerleader coach who has resigned amid allegations of a relationship with a former student was arrested Wednesday afternoon.

According to a press release, the district received information on the allegations and campus police began an investigation. When school officials confronted Mary Ainsley Thigpen, 29, of Lufkin, that she would be placed on administrative leave, she resigned.

School police obtained a warrant for Thigpen's arrest on a second-degree charge of improper relationship between educator and student, and she was booked into the Angelina County Jail on that charge Wednesday afternoon.According to jail records, she has since posted her bail amount and has been released from the jail.

The school is asking that anyone with information on the matter to contact school attorney Wayne Haglund or local law enforcement.
