NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Stephen F. Austin University's SFA gardens and National Association of Interpretation hosted an outdoor adventure day for families today.
Students were set up at twelve different stations throughout the Pineywoods Native Plant Center in Nacogdoches to educate young children and their families on nature skills and the great outdoors.
Some of the family fun activities included cooking demonstrations, archery, learning how to fish and fire safety.
Kids were also introduced to fun facts about animals and even encountered one first hand.
Elyce Rodewald, SFA Garden's Education Coordinator "At one point a little buck came out of the forest and trotted through the area where all the booths were and so people were just so amazed and in awe that we had such big wildlife right here coming to our family day, so that really was an adventure." Rodewald said.
Event organizers say they hope that the educational experience will encourage youngsters to unplug and that they can have just as much active fun outside surrounded by nature.
