NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Red Ribbon Week started Monday across the nation.
At Nacogdoches Head Start, red balloons were handed out to youngsters to commemorate the anti-drug campaign. On the count of three, the children let them go as a pledge to stay drug-free.
Similar observances happened all over East Texas, according to Red Ribbon Week organizers.
"All the schools in Nacogdoches County are participating and all the Nacogdoches city schools are participating, so we're very pleased," Peggy Muckleroy, the Project Coalition coordinator for the Alcohol Drug Abuse Council "And, of course, Head Start and a lot of other programs like that are also participating."
The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council of Deep East Texas estimates more than 80-thousand red ribbons were handed out to children.
All week long, schools will offer anti-drug events.
