NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

A Nacogdoches County constable says a Chireno man has been arrested in connection to the vandalism of a toddler's grave in the Chireno area.

Constable David Stone said authorities have arrested Walter Emmett Thompson, 46, after he was found on State Highway 7 in Nacogdoches. Thompson was charged with Class A misdemeanor abuse of a corpse, according to the Nacogdoches County Jail website.

Stone said Thompson has confessed to the crime.

Stone said Thompson is the great-nephew of the toddler who was buried in the grave in the 1940s. Stone said Thompson claimed his deceased mother had put deeds and property papers in a metal box on top of that grave. Thompson did not find that box.

The constable said because of the grave site's age, there were no remains or casket. However, the disturbance of the grave was a criminal act, Stone said.

Stone said they were able to name Thompson as a person-of-interest after they had set up a camera on the site and Thompson returned last Thursday morning. Stone said Thompson was known to walk around barefoot and they had found such prints at the scene.

Stone said about 40 yards from the grave, they found evidence of feces near a grave site and Thompson admitted to doing that, too.

Stone said he wanted to thank Texas Rangers, Nacogdoches police, and Crime Stoppers for their help.

Thompson had just recently gotten out of prison on a burglary charge.
