LUFKIN, TX (Press Release)- Angelina College's Kyle Manary is officially undefeated in his first year as the Roadrunners' head basketball coach.
Yes, it was the season opener, but Manary's team offered a glimpse of what to expect throughout the season, with seven 'Runners posting double figures in scoring – with three of them notching double-doubles – in AC's 125-69 win over Victoria College Tuesday night at Shands Gymnasium.
Gary Blackston led the Roadrunners with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Teammates Shaq Gainey (19 points, 12 rebounds), Robert Lewis (14 points), Corinthian Ramsey (13 points), Angel Bullock (12 points on four three pointers), Quinton Bush (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Trent Brinkley (11) points also scored in double figures.
Victoria's Bryant Wolf led the Pirates with 20 points; Devon Jones and Dante Cunningham added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Manary's plan to capitalize on his team's depth took a few first-half minutes to get on-track, with the Roadrunners scoring just 18 points in the game's first 10 minutes. But over the final part of the first half, AC began putting together what should prove to be a consistently high-scoring offense featuring a balanced attack, extending its lead to as many as 18 points before intermission.
"We were a little sluggish early, mostly because of turnovers and being a little slow to defend," Manary said. "Once our defensive intensity cranked up, we started hitting shots, and all of that opened things up for us the rest of the way."
Manary said Tuesday's continuous rotation is part of a season-long plan to keep the Roadrunners moving at a fast pace all game long.
"We've got players up and down the bench who can contribute, so we're going to get everything we can from them," Manary said. "I thought the guys did a good job finding out what they needed to do once they hit the floor."
