LUFKIN, TEXAS (News Release) - For the ninth year, the Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce hosts the Salute to Healthcare Banquet presented by CHI St. Luke’s Health Memorial. The Banquet recognizes and honors the exemplary achievements of several individuals in the local medical community.

This year’s banquet features guest speaker, Dorit Donoviel, Ph.D. As deputy chief scientist, Dr. Donoviel oversees the diverse portfolio of science and technology research and development projects at National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) that address the challenges faced by humans in space. She is giving a presentation over “Space: The Final Healthcare Frontier”.

Donoviel leads the NSBRI Industry Forum and the SMARTCAP grant program that funds and mentors small startup companies. She is also the Director of the Laboratory for Biomedical Innovations where she evaluates new technologies and countermeasures that have the potential to transform medical care in space and on Earth.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
