NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Friday is Veterans Day. It's estimated there are 927,000 veterans in Texas who are eligible for work.

Across the state, hiring fairs were held to help put them to work. One of those job fairs was in Nacogdoches.

After a patriotic opening, veterans among the 1,000 found in Work Force Solutions Deep East Texas 12-county region got busy learning, interviewing, and applying for jobs. Among them, was Bruce Jones.

"I'm looking for a job to help supplement my retirement and keep my mind and my body busy,” Jones said.

This is after 26 years in the U.S. Army serving in the Special Forces and military communications. He's seeking a career change after 20 years in a civilian job.

His advice to younger veterans is to apply themselves through what can be a tough transition.

"Come up to the employer like Angie here and say, 'Hey look, I want that job because I know I can do it, and I know you people will give me the right training to do it,’” Jones said.

The veteran needing a boost of confidence can receive job prep courses from Work Force Solutions Deep East Texas.

"Use those communication skills,” a counselor said. “Be able to get along with people on the job."

With those skills, they'll be ready for places like Elliott Electric Supply run by a man who believes in veterans.

"In general what we found is veterans are more disciplined and present themselves better and make better employees,” Elliott said.

It’s something an HR manager and a veteran's mom likes to hear.

“My son was in the Air force for eight years and served two tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq, and I appreciate anyone who takes the opportunity to hire the veteran and to give them a place in society when they come back from wars because it is difficult for them to get out and find a job,” said Misty Thomas, the human resources manager for Elliott Electric Supply.

However, it’s possible thanks to Red, White & You hiring fairs. In the first four years, it has connected more than 42,000 veterans with over 6,400 employers.

Veterans who didn't make it to the Red, White & You hiring fair can still sign up for priority notification of jobs thru Work Force Solutions Deep East Texas.
