LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Lufkin police have arrested a man whom his wife has accused of trying to stab her and instead stabbing her furniture and then kicking her in the head in front of a busy street on Tuesday.
Derrick Jamar Smith, 30, of Lufkin, is charged with second-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and Class-A assault causes bodily injury.
According to the police report, officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Frank Avenue at 7:51 p.m. after hearing that Smith was there destroying items and trying to fight with his wife.
When the officer arrived, Smith had already left the home in his car.
The officer spoke with the wife and her children, who were very scared and upset. She said Smith had come over to her home to get his pistol that she had in her car. She said she would not let him get the gun because she was afraid he would use it on her. She said that three days earlier, Smith had busted out her back windshield of her car and she had just had it replaced.
She said Smith then became irate to her and punched her in the nose and tried to hit her with some workout weights. She said he also destroyed her 50-inch TV.
She said Smith then got a large silver handle kitchen knife and tried to stab her with it and did stab her couch and her bed. She said she was able to get away from him and run outside into the busy road to try to flag down someone. She said Smith pushed her down in the road and kicked her in the right side of her head. He then left in his vehicle when cars started stopping and to help her and to call police.
The wife was then taken to a Lufkin hospital. An officer located Smith's car in the 110 block of Collins Street, but Smith was not there. Officers did find a knife in the front passenger seat.
Later Tuesday night, officers reported Smith came to the police lobby to report his wife had tried to stab him and that he had kicked her into the dresser and left the house.
Police say Smith denied trying to stab his wife and said she must have stabbed her own furniture and that the TV was destroyed when he kicked her.
The officer saw multiple small briars stuck to Smith's pants and asked if he got them from running to the woods. The report states Smith said he got them because he works in the woods for a living.
Police arrested Smith in the lobby at 9:56 p.m.
His bond was not set as of 10 a.m. Wednesday.
