Angelina, Nacogdoches counties see decreases in their jobless rates

Angelina and Nacogdoches counties saw a decrease in their jobless numbers in October, mirroring what occurred at the state level in the same month.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, Angelina County jobless rate of 5.9 percent was down from the 6.6 percent that was reported in September. In Angelina County, 34,379 of an available workforce were employed in the month of October.

Angelina County’s available workforce is down from what it was in September. In September, the county had an available workforce of 37,146. Back in October of 2015, Angelina County had unemployment rate of 6.1.

Nacogdoches County went from a jobless rate of 5.1 percent in September to 4.6 percent in October. In all, 26,881 people from an available workforce of 28,168 were employed in October. The county’s October 2016 jobless rate is the same as the 4.6 percent reported in October 2015.

At the city level, the Texas Workforce Commission reported that the City of Lufkin had a jobless rate of 5.7 percent in October, which was down from the 6.4 percent reported in September. Out of an available workforce of 15,299 that month, only 683 were unemployed. The City of Lufkin had an unemployment rate of 6.0 percent in October 2015.

The City of Nacogdoches also saw a decrease in its jobless rate, going from 5.1 percent in September to 4.7 percent in October. For that month, the Oldest Town in Texas had an available workforce of 14,470, and of that number, 13,787 were employed in October.

The TWC reported that the City of Nacogdoches had a jobless rate of 4.5 percent in October 2015.

At the state level, Texas had a 4.4 percent unemployment number in October, which is down from the 4.9 percent reported in September. The Lone Star State had a 4.4 percent jobless rate in October 2015.

Here are the jobless rates for the other 10 counties in the Deep East Texas Workforce Development Area. The April figures are listed in parenthesis.

Houston: 4.5 percent (5.1 percent)

Jasper: 7.2 percent (8.4 percent)

Newton: 6.5 percent (6.5 percent)

Polk: 6.0 percent (6.9 percent)

Sabine: 8.5 percent (10.0 percent)

San Augustine:  8.6 percent (9.8 percent)

San Jacinto: 6.0 percent (6.7 percent)

Shelby: 5.3 percent (6.2 percent)

Trinity: 5.8 percent (6.8 percent)

Tyler: 7.1 percent (8.2 percent)
