LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin man will spend the Thanksgiving holiday in jail after telling an officer he was breaking the law in order to go back to jail for a place to sleep and to stay out of the cold.
Shawn Daggett, 36, is charged with criminal trespass.
According to the Lufkin police report, Daggett approached an off-duty officer working security at Brookshire Brothers, located at 300 South Chestnut Street, at 5:58 p.m., and told him he had a criminal trespass warning for the story.
The officer reported Daggett told him he had just been released from jail minutes earlier and that he wanted to go back so he would have a place to sleep, get free food and a shower for the next day or so. He said he was afraid he would die on the streets from the cold weather and rain.
The officer confirmed Daggett had a criminal trespass warning and placed him under arrest.
It's Daggett's fourth arrest since Oct. 5 on the charge. Each time, he has been released for time served.
