LUFKIN, TX (AP) - The Lufkin Rotary Club has been baking fluffy waffles and slathering them with syrup for the past 60 years. The event has many fond memories for everyone, but maybe none more romantic then the story of James and Donna Parish.
The two first met at the waffle bake 48 years ago, and have been coming ever since.
"My father introduced us," Donna Parish said. "Even though we went to the same school, we did not know each other. He [her dad] called me after work and said, 'Hey come down to the Waffle Bake'. When I got there I had no idea he [James] was going to be there."
Donna would meet James on Dec.10, 1968. A few months later, the two were married, and they have continued the Christmas tradition every year.
"It just reminds us of how fortunate we are to share these memories," Donna said. "Also to visit with people we don't get to see."
The waffle bake continues through Thursday night on the campus of Angelina College. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children. The money will go back to various community projects in Lufkin.
