GATLINBURG, TN (WMC) -

The East Tennessee wildfires ravaged Gatlinburg, Sevier County, and the surrounding area, killing 11 people and injuring 80 more.

The loss of life and property is heartbreaking, but there is a spirit of faith, survival, and humanity that is keeping residents in the area thankful for what they still have and optimistic about the future.

One of those residents is former Memphian Carol Musik, who finally got back to her $4 million mansion to assess the damage.

"As we left our house, I saw these big flames coming up where our garage was," she said.

When she evacuated, she knew she would never see her home again as it once was. But, despite losing everything, Carol said she still has so much to be thankful for.

"We're alive and that means a whole lot more knowing how close we came to dying," Musik said. "It's special to get to talk to you, and say hi to everybody there and let people know that things are going to be OK here."

Musik went to Memphis State University and worked in radio with WMC Memphis in the 1980s.
