NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Officials with the Nacogdoches Area United Way have canceled the Nine Flags Christmas Parade that was originally scheduled for Saturday because of the likelihood of severe weather conditions taking place over the weekend.

The National Weather Service Center in Shreveport forecast predicts 6 to 8 inches of rain with severe downpours, a press release stated.

“NAUW officials made this decision after confirming with the Nacogdoches Police, Fire Department, and city officials who were equally concerned about tomorrow’s expected conditions,” the press release stated. “Alternative plans are to stage a Nacogdoches Christmas celebration with Santa on the Square and fireworks for all to enjoy so please pay attention to the Parade Facebook page for more details.”

In the press release, NAUW President and CEP Gary Ashcraft expressed his appreciation to all the participants who worked hard to build floats and arrange for bands and various clubs to take part in the parade. He praised the leadership of the Christmas Parade planning team, including Maury Smith-Littleton, Caroline Garner, and Alexis Guthrey, along with the Eaton Corporation, the signature sponsor of the parade.

However, the organizers of the Christmas parade had some good news to announce Friday as well.

“While we are sad that we have canceled the Nacogdoches Nine Flags Lighted Christmas Parade, we are excited to announce our non-parade “parade in Festival Plaza on December 10, 2016,” a press release from Christmas Parade Nac stated.

The time of the event is TBA.

“We are inviting everyone to bring their floats/entries, light them up, and park them around Festival Park for everyone to see,” the press release stated. “Our walking groups are invited to perform on Festival Stage; please contact us to schedule right away.”

The press release stated that all the details will be released by the end of the day Monday, Dec. 5.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
